Sweet success for Lincoln bakery business

A new division of a long-established Lincoln bakery business has reported a record Christmas with sales indicating that it’s definitely all about the cake!

The Original Cake Company launched its wholesale division, Café Direct, two years ago to cater for growing demand from local cafes, hotels and restaurants asking for handmade whole cakes in a range of flavours that the artisan bakery is known for.

Now offering a 24-hour turnaround from order to delivery across Lincolnshire and further afield into Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire, Café Direct is celebrating sweet success with 100% growth over the last 12 months.

“The Original Cake Company has been baking for over 50 years now and has built up a well-deserved reputation for the quality, flavour and appearance of its handmade cakes which have always been, and continue to be, so popular with our customers,” said Dan Swanwick, Sales Manager.

“Our Café Direct range continues this tradition and now enables cafes all over the region to offer a fantastic selection of fresh handmade, artisan cakes without having to invest in extra staff, skills or kitchen space.”

Café Direct’s 2022 Christmas range included the Festive Victoria Sponge topped with piped Christmas trees, the Ferrero Rocher chocolate hazelnut praline sponge and a Chocolate Yule Log.

Popular year-round options include traditional favourites Coffee & Walnut and Lemon Curd Drizzle, and contemporary flavours such as Sea Salted Caramel & Chocolate Drizzle. To keep things interesting, Café Direct also offers new ‘specials’ every month – all developed in-house by chief cake developer Jane Walker.

The 10” round cakes are all triple-layered for extra indulgence and can be cut into 14 generous portions for maximum profit potential. Café Direct also offers a range of loaf cakes including Very Cherry Bakewell, Sticky Toffee and White Chocolate & Raspberry. Vegan and gluten-free options are also available.

The Original Cake Company has been based in the heart of Lincoln for 50 years and has been baking cakes for some of the UK’s iconic brands since 1972.

All its cakes are produced the old-fashioned way, by hand, and made by a team of talented bakers led by managing director Simon Woodiwiss and his business partner Karol Kaminski, operations director.
